Where Can Newark Residents Access New Health Care Services?

NEWARK, NJ — Newark residents now have a new place to access important health care services such as primary care, preventive screenings, women’s health, point of care testing and chronic condition management.

University Hospital opened its first Health and Wellness Center in Newark earlier this month. The center is located at 388 West Market Street in Newark, and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Patients can schedule an appointment at the University Hospital Health and Wellness Center by calling 973-972-1000.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and community block party was held at Georgia King Village last week to mark the center’s grand opening.

What Services Are Offered?

According to University Hospital, the center is intended to be a “community health clinic” that helps to ease a gap in services for many Newark residents.

The center was developed under the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency’s Hospital Partnership Subsidy Program. The clinic – which also has a dedicated space for community programming and health education events – sits beneath 78 affordable rental apartments for low- and moderate-income residents, including 16 units for unhoused individuals and families.

What Do Officials Say?

Melanie Walter, executive director of the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, said the new health care center is a good example of the “healthy homes” concept.

“Fairmount neighborhood residents deserve quality affordable housing and health care within walking distance of their homes,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka agreed, giving a thumbs-up to the new center.
