SHELBY — Third Street Family Health Services plans to expand on renovations to its Shelby center after a recent allocation from Ohio’s capital budget.

What are the new developments?

State Sen. Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario) announced June 17 nearly $5 million in state capital budget funding for projects across Senate District 22 — including $350,000 for the Shelby Health and Wellness Center.

Third Street’s Shelby center, located at 31 E. Main St., is currently undergoing renovations to expand services, including OB/GYN, behavioral health and existing medical and dental areas.

How will the funding be used?

Alex Goff, development director for Third Street Family Health Services, said recent funding has created an opportunity to expand on the center’s renovations.

“We had some things that were earmarked for a phase two and we’re looking to try to move forward with some of those things,” he said.

Third Street plans to make improvements to the facade and roof on the front side of the East Main Street building.

Goff said Third Street is hoping to reopen its Shelby center around early fall this year.

“It’s going to allow us to keep our doors open and not have to close back up for a phase two or disrupt patient operations either, so we’re grateful from that perspective,” he said.

Renovations to include a central waiting space

According to previous Richland Source reporting, Third Street saw total patients increase by more than 100% across the past five years at their Shelby center.

Goff said the retention rate with Shelby patients, including those having to travel to Third Street locations in Mansfield and Bucyrus, has been “exceptional.”

“We’re excited to be able to make that access point a little easier for folks over in Shelby,” he said.

Renovations at the Shelby Health and Wellness Center will also include a central waiting space, the development director said.

Goff said previously, waiting areas for medical and dental services were separated.

“The nice part about this now is we’ll have a central waiting area where folks will be able to be there for either dental, medical or down the line we’re looking at some additional services with behavioral health and an OB/GYN,” Goff said.

“Our expectation is it’s going to lead to more of a holistic health care approach for our patients and give them access to more services that they hadn’t had prior to the renovation.”

Third Street ‘excited’ to be a part of downtown Shelby resurgence

Third Street serves Richland, Ashland, Crawford and Marion counties. Its merger last year with Community Counseling & Wellness Centers in Bucyrus and Marion expanded mental health services.

Goff said Third Street is excited about its renovation in downtown Shelby being a part of the city’s recent “resurgence.”

“To be able to update that (31 E. Main St. building), contribute to kind of that downtown resurgence and making it a nicer, more accessible space for the residents of Shelby… I’m just excited about being able to contribute on that front,” he said.

Updates regarding renovations at the Shelby Health and Wellness Center are periodically posted to Third Street’s Facebook page.
