ALEXANDRIA, VA – Neighborhood Health (NH) provides care to individuals who are often low-income, uninsured, or underinsured. With locations in Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax County, this nonprofit organization, supported by the federal government, serves tens of thousands of patients annually. On August 7, the organization received a grant of $500,000 aimed at increasing access to cancer screenings over a two-year period.

According to the National Cancer Institute, research indicates that access to screenings and treatment is influenced by income. To address this issue for NH patients, Carole Johnson and Jim Macrae, the administrator and associate administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, respectively, visited the Alexandria location at 6677 Richmond Hwy. They announced the grant and toured the facility.

During her remarks, Johnson shared new data revealing that health centers across the country served a record-breaking 32.5 million patients last year. A report published this January by APNews.com found that these centers serve one out of every 11 Americans. Johnson also emphasized the importance of National Health Center Week (August 4-10).

“We appreciate the chance, during health center week, to celebrate how much primary care matters,” she stated, “and to visit a model health center like Neighborhood Health to see firsthand how you have integrated resources.”

Founded in 1997 as a single clinic, Neighborhood Health has expanded to 15 locations, offering services such as family medicine, dentistry, pediatric care, and behavioral health. To see all locations, click HERE.
