Gadsden Police Department Receives Grant for Mental Health Resources
GADSDEN, Ala. (WBMA) — The Gadsden Police Department has been awarded $15,000 in grant funding aimed at improving health and wellness options for law enforcement personnel.
The funding, provided by Norfolk Southern Corporation, will enable first responders and their families to access Lexipol’s Cordico mental health and wellness solutions.
Why is Mental Health Support Important for First Responders?
As Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford stated, “The men and women who protect and serve our community often put their bodies in harm’s way. While we celebrate each shift when they return home without physical damage, sometimes they may have wounds no one knows are there.” This highlights the critical need for mental health resources in the police force.
What Programs are Supported by the Grant?
The grant is part of two community initiatives launched by Norfolk Southern in 2023: the Safety First Grant Program, which focuses on advancing safety organizations, and the Thriving Communities Grant Program, which promotes economic opportunity and community well-being.
How Will the Funding be Used?
The funding will also cover a 12-month subscription for Gadsden’s first responders to access the Cordico app, which connects them with qualified mental health professionals experienced in high-stress environments. After this period, the city will evaluate the potential for continued funding through local resources.
