The U.S. surgeon general recently issued a public health advisory highlighting parental stress as a significant public health challenge. According to Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, a national survey revealed that 48% of parents feel their stress is overwhelming on most days.
Factors contributing to this stress include financial worries, concerns about children’s well-being, the influence of social media, and the threat of violence in schools. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these issues, adding to the already heavy burdens parents carry.
Dr. Barbara Bentley, a pediatric psychologist, noted, “We are suffering through an epidemic of loneliness, and it has been challenging to return to our previous normal of social interactions and supportive relationships post-COVID.” To alleviate stress, she recommends that parents plan their weeks ahead, ensuring they include downtime.
“Even saving five minutes multiple times a day or 15 minutes for yourself can create a necessary space to unwind,” Dr. Bentley advises.
Health Implications
In light of these findings, the surgeon general is urging government and employers to implement programs that provide better support for parents, including child care and family services.
