Scheurer Health

Scheurer Health, in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, has announced a significant grant awarded to Bad Axe Public Schools aimed at enhancing its Wellness Clinic.

The $200,000 grant will facilitate the expansion of clinic space, broaden the range of services offered, and enable the hiring of additional staff.

This expansion will place a heightened emphasis on mental health services tailored for students. Currently, Scheurer Health is actively seeking a licensed social worker to join school nurse Heidi Still in the clinic.

Clark Ramsey, head of marketing, business development, and communications for Scheurer Health, stated, “The goal is to provide the baseline health services needed to teach students about their physical and mental health.”

The grant will also enhance the clinic’s accessibility by extending services to Bad Axe High School’s campus. The clinic is set to occupy the former choir room at the high school, with construction already in progress.

Presently, the wellness clinic operates out of Bad Axe Elementary, which has posed challenges in effectively serving all Bad Axe students. The transition to the high school will enable the clinic to offer more immediate care services typically sought from a general practitioner. Additionally, the new clinic will increase on-site testing for COVID-19 and other illnesses.

Despite the rapidly approaching school year, Ramsey remains optimistic that the clinic will be operational by the start of the new academic term. “We will be rolling for the school year,” Ramsey affirmed. “Now, all the services may not be available, depending on when the social worker comes, but we are on target for the school year.”
