What is the current Listeria outbreak linked to deli meats?

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has initiated an investigation into a strain of Listeria monocytogenes linked to deli counter meats, which has resulted in 28 hospitalizations across 12 states, including New York.

Most individuals who fell ill reported consuming meats sliced at deli counters. The CDC warns that Listeria can easily spread among deli equipment, surfaces, hands, and food, and is not eliminated by refrigeration.

As of Friday afternoon, the CDC has not issued any product recalls and is actively gathering data to identify specific deli meats that may be contaminated. The agency has indicated that there is no evidence that prepackaged deli meats are responsible for the illnesses.

The CDC highlights that individuals who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or have weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness if they contract Listeria. This can lead to a serious condition known as invasive listeriosis, which may spread to other parts of the body.

Those in these higher-risk categories are advised to avoid deli meats unless they are reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit or are “steaming hot” to effectively kill the bacteria. It is also recommended that these individuals clean their refrigerators and surfaces that may have come into contact with deli meats.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue. Pregnant women may face additional risks such as pregnancy loss or serious illness in newborns. Non-pregnant individuals may also experience headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.

The CDC urges those at higher risk who experience any of these symptoms to contact their healthcare provider immediately.

According to a map of the Listeria outbreak on the CDC’s website, New York has reported seven cases, although specific locations within the state have not been disclosed. Other states affected include Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The CDC has reported two fatalities linked to this outbreak, one in Illinois and another in New Jersey. The agency notes that it typically takes three to four weeks to determine if a sick individual is part of an outbreak. The first reported case of the current outbreak occurred on May 29.

It is important to note that the outbreak may not be confined to the 12 states currently identified, and the actual number of cases may be higher, as some individuals recover without seeking medical attention or testing for Listeria.
