What is it like to live and work on a cruise ship?

Introduction

Growing up, Payton Martin was captivated by the idea of cruise ships, inspired by her family’s frequent trips. At just 23, she decided to pursue her dream of working and living on one.

Making the Leap

In the summer of 2021, after a series of COVID-19 related cancellations, Martin realized it was time to act on her aspirations. “I always had the idea of working aboard a cruise ship but never thought of it as something possible for myself,” she shared. After applying for a job as an entertainment host with Carnival, she took the plunge.

Life on Board

Upon starting her new role, Martin lived in a shared cabin. She quickly learned about the diverse job opportunities available on cruise ships, from photography to baking. After extensive training, she began her journey aboard the Carnival Horizon in January 2022, leaving college behind to embrace this new adventure.

Romance at Sea

While working on the Horizon, Martin applied for a position on the Carnival Pride. It was here she met Salvatore Giglio, a second electro-technical officer. Their initial encounters led to a modern romance, culminating in a proposal just months later.

Challenges and Rewards

Martin reflected on her experiences, stating, “I got to learn how much bravery and courage I had.” Despite the challenges of living away from family, she cherished the opportunity to travel to over 20 destinations, including Spain, France, and Greece.

Conclusion

Now back in Italy, Martin and Giglio are building a life together, balancing time between their families in the U.S. and Italy. She encourages others to consider working on a cruise ship, emphasizing the personal growth and adventure it offers.

“You just never know your full potential if you don’t put yourself outside of your comfort zone,” she concluded.
