Hepatitis A Rise in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Doctors in the city are reporting an unusual surge in Hepatitis A cases among adults, a trend they find noteworthy.

Typically, Hepatitis A, a highly contagious liver infection, is more common in children and less prevalent in areas with strong sanitation and hygiene practices. The virus spreads mainly through contaminated food and water, and those who recover usually gain lifelong immunity.

Why is this surge occurring?

Dr. Naresh Bhat, chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at a local private hospital, explained that while Hepatitis A is usually mild in children under 12, it appears more severe in adults, who may have underlying conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or Hepatitis B infection.

“Many of us might have had Hepatitis A as children without realizing it. Improved sanitation has reduced childhood cases, but now more adults are being affected. This is proving to be a larger issue compared to other types of hepatitis,” Dr. Bhat said.

What about vaccination?

Although a vaccine for Hepatitis A exists, it is less well-known compared to the Hepatitis B vaccine. Dr. Yashavanth H S, a consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist at a private liver disease center in the city, emphasized the importance of vaccination for immunocompromised individuals, the elderly, and those with pre-existing liver conditions.

Is there a risk of permanent damage?

While Hepatitis A typically does not cause permanent liver damage, Dr. Yashavanth referred to the current increase in cases as a “mild outbreak-like situation,” a sentiment echoed by Dr. Mallikarjun, another gastroenterologist. He stressed that maintaining good sanitation and hygiene is crucial for preventing Hepatitis A.
