What does Nice's sale of Numera mean for the health and wellness industry?

Nice is divesting its stake in the personal emergency response system (PERS) sector. Announced on August 14, 2024, the home and building management company revealed its plans to sell its health and wellness brand, Numera, to the Malar Group at an unspecified future date.

This decision is part of Nice’s strategy to refine its product portfolio, following the strategic rebranding of SpeakerCraft, Elan, and Panamax late last year. The company states that closing this transaction is a crucial step in simplifying its portfolio and enhancing its focus on core business areas.

As Nice enters this new growth phase, it aims to accelerate the integration of brands to provide a more comprehensive solution for partners and end-users.

Numera’s Legacy and Future Post-Sale

Operating for over 20 years, Numera has made significant contributions to telehealth and telecare monitoring solutions, including the Home Safety Hub medical alert system, the Libris 2 emergency support pendant, and the EverThere cloud-based health tracking application.

These innovations enable service providers and health-related companies to effectively monitor and manage their clients’ health, fostering greater independence and confidence among individuals regarding their safety.

While Numera primarily targets the aging in place demographic, it also operates in construction, retail, delivery, and personal security sectors.

Post-sale, Numera will join the Malar Group, which encompasses a diverse range of businesses, from physical infrastructure manufacturers to digital service providers in IT, cybersecurity, communication, and education.

“We deeply value the Numera brand and its contributions to consumer safety and security, and we are confident that Numera will continue to thrive under Malar Group’s leadership, serving a vital need in the health and wellness market,” stated Luca Longhin, President of Nice North America.

“Looking ahead, our strategic focus remains steadfast on innovating and delivering best-in-class home management and security solutions for our core customer base.”

Numera and the Expanding Digital Health Ecosystem

Although not yet fully mainstream, the growing trends in home healthcare have impacted many in the custom integration industry and the broader tech landscape.

While integrators known for innovative business models have already entered the market, digital healthcare remains in its early stages. The largest senior population in U.S. history is just beginning to retire, with many preferring to age in place rather than move to care facilities.

The role of smart homes in this trend is still evolving. Nice’s decision to sell Numera may reflect their perspective on market direction, suggesting that Numera’s broader focus did not align with Nice’s current strategy to strengthen its smart home offerings.

It will be intriguing to see if Numera re-enters the smart home sector in the coming years under new circumstances.
