Understanding Fitness in the U.S. Space Force
Military service members are expected to be fit – it’s all a part of making sure a fighting force is ready for duty – and the U.S. Space Force is no exception.
Guardians may spend more time tracking satellites and space debris than engaging in hand-to-hand combat, but that doesn’t mean they can slack off when it comes to physical training. As the newest military service, the USSF is taking a more holistic health approach to fitness standards.
“Regular exercise isn’t just about building physical strength; it’s about optimizing our potential,” said USSF Chief Master Sgt. Jacqueline Sauvé.
When the Space Force was first established in December of 2019, it relied mostly on the Air Force’s standard Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) test. Early in 2020, the Space Force began developing a service-specific human performance capability known as the Holistic Health Approach (HHA).
What is the Holistic Health Approach?
The HHA aims to increase health outcomes for Guardians by meeting them “where they are” and showing them what “right” looks like. It includes continuous fitness, performance health optimization, and capacity-building.
Wearable fitness technology plays a crucial role in this approach, allowing for ongoing assessment of fitness metrics that are key indicators of health.
How is Body Composition Assessed?
The Space Force uses waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) to assess body composition, focusing on the location of fat in the body, which is a significant indicator of health risks.
“Keep your waist circumference to less than half your height,” advises John Hofman, a certified strength and conditioning specialist.
Why is Continuous Fitness Important?
Unlike traditional assessments that promote cramming for tests, the Space Force promotes consistent physical activity throughout the year. This approach is supported by a two-year study using portable wearable fitness devices.
What Support is Available for Guardians?
Guardian Resilience Teams are being implemented at every USSF base to ensure that service members receive the necessary support for both physical and mental fitness.
Conclusion
By adopting a holistic approach, the Space Force aims to empower Guardians to make healthy choices and maintain a well-rounded fitness regimen.
