Hawkins United Methodist Church is gearing up to host an engaging Health Fair on September 19th, from 1 to 3 p.m., at their ALC Building located at 3736 Halls Ferry Rd. in Vicksburg. This event is a collaborative effort by the Retired Education Personnel of Vicksburg Warren County and the Hawkins UMC Mission Team, and it warmly welcomes everyone in the community.
What to Expect?
The Health Fair will feature over 20 providers from Warren County, offering valuable information and limited wellness assessments. Attendees can expect to receive pamphlets, have their blood pressure checked, and get answers to their health-related questions.
Community Involvement
Lucy Young, a dedicated member of both the Hawkins UMC Mission Team and the Retired Educators, highlighted the significance of this event. “The retired group wanted to have another health fair,” she said. “What better way to tie that in with Hawkins Mission Team than to combine and host this event?”
Young emphasized the educational aspect of the fair, stating, “It’s really a good opportunity for people to pick up information covering a wide range of health and wellness and community opportunities. We’re trying to cover every area.”
Who Will Be There?
Local law enforcement, including the police and fire departments, will provide insights on crime prevention and safety. Dorothy Hilderbrand from the YMCA will demonstrate chair exercises, and Fawn from The Secret Garden will offer chair yoga sessions. Although the event is geared towards the older population, it is open to everyone.
Representatives from Murry Chiro and Disc, The Vision Center, and Oldenburg Family Dentistry will be present to offer advice and answer questions. Nutritional information will be available, prepared by Ali Hopson, with Gail Kavanaugh on hand to discuss nutrition.
Additional Resources
A counselor from Grace Christian Counseling, representatives from the Mississippi Alzheimer’s Association, and the Medgar and Angela Scott Foundation will be available to provide information on their services. United Way and Good Shepherd Community Center will also be present, seeking to connect with potential volunteers.
Fun and Prizes
In addition to the wealth of information, attendees can enjoy door prizes and healthy snacks. Audrey Tyrone, president of the Retired Educators organization, mentioned that prizes will include thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, masks, and hand sanitizers.
Young concluded, “People of all ages are welcome,” ensuring that the event is inclusive and beneficial for everyone.
