CenterWell, the healthcare services division of Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), is set to lease clinical space and establish senior-focused primary care centers at 23 Walmart Supercenter locations across Florida, Georgia, Missouri, and Texas. These new centers will be situated adjacent to Walmart stores in clinical office spaces previously occupied by Walmart Health.

In April 2024, Walmart announced the closure of 51 Walmart Health centers along with Walmart Health Virtual Care. The retail giant from Arkansas cited a challenging reimbursement environment and rising operating costs as reasons for this unsustainable business model. Despite these closures, Walmart continues to operate 4,600 pharmacies and over 3,000 vision centers.

The primary care centers will operate under the CenterWell Senior Primary Care and Conviva Care Centers brand names, specifically designed to enhance access to primary care services for seniors in these communities. CenterWell anticipates that the centers will be equipped, staffed, and operational by the first half of 2025, although financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed.

“CenterWell is committed to providing seniors with high-quality healthcare that is accessible, comprehensive, and most importantly, personalized. We are excited about the unique opportunity to lease space from a world-class community partner like Walmart and offer seniors in these four states greater access to our integrated approach to care,” stated Sanjay Shetty, M.D., president of CenterWell. “These nearly two dozen primary care centers are specifically designed for seniors, featuring dedicated entrances and easy parking to meet the expectations of our patients nationwide. We are eager to expand our mission to help patients lead happier, healthier lives.”

“We are looking forward to welcoming CenterWell into these purpose-built healthcare spaces to provide quality care to communities in four states,” remarked Brian Setzer, executive vice president of Walmart Health & Wellness. “Leasing these spaces to a well-known and successful healthcare delivery organization is a win for customers and patients, as we continue to focus on our core health & wellness business of Pharmacy and Optical.”

Together, CenterWell Senior Primary Care and its sister brand Conviva Care Centers form Humana’s Primary Care Organization, delivering care to approximately 318,000 seniors across nearly 300 centers in 15 states.

These locations will feature a team of board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, and medical assistants who coordinate care alongside care coaches, social workers, behavioral health specialists, and clinical pharmacists.
