UVA Confirms No Meningitis Outbreak Among Students

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – The University of Virginia has confirmed that all close contacts related to the recent case of meningococcal disease have been identified and given preventative treatment. No additional cases have been reported, and university health officials stress there is no ongoing threat to the student population.

According to a March 15 statement from UVA Student Health and Wellness, the university is not experiencing an outbreak of meningococcal disease. The Charlottesville-Albemarle Health Department has worked closely with the university to conduct contact tracing and provide preventive treatment to individuals at risk.

“Meningococcal disease is a serious illness, but it is not easily spread, and the risk to the general public remains low,” the university said, emphasizing that there is no cause for alarm.

UVA continues to monitor for symptoms in the broader community and encourages students to seek medical attention if they feel unwell, maintaining vigilant health practices during this period.
