Utah Makes History with Fluoride Ban
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 28, 2025 (UPI) — Utah has made history by becoming the first U.S. state to ban fluoride in its public water systems under legislation signed by Governor Spencer Cox. The bill, signed on Thursday, prohibits the addition of fluoride to public water supplies.
This legislation, which takes effect on May 7, was introduced in January and passed the state Senate in February. Utah’s use of community water fluoridation has historically been low, with the CDC ranking the state 44th among the 50 states in 2022; only 43.6% of residents had access to fluoridated water.
Leading medical organizations, including the CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Dental Association, support fluoridation in drinking water, emphasizing its role in cavity prevention.
The legislative trend does not stop in Utah. Other states such as Kentucky, Montana, and Tennessee are also considering similar measures, either allowing optional fluoridation or banning it altogether. In Florida, recent bills proposed aim to eliminate the use of any health-related additives, which would include fluoride.
