Grand Bahama, The Bahamas — On Saturday, October 26, 2024, the Urban Renewal Commission proudly hosted its first Health and Wellness Fair at the Urban Renewal headquarters on Queen’s Highway. The fair aimed to provide essential healthcare services to the residents of Grand Bahama, regardless of age.
Free Healthcare Services Showcased
The event featured collaboration with Grand Bahama Health Services, creating a comprehensive one-stop-shop for free health screenings and consultations. Community members had opportunities to engage with general practitioners and specialists while participating in screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure, HIV, prostate health, and foot care.
Inclusive Participation from Health Professionals
Mental health experts, representatives from the Cancer Society of Grand Bahama, and other health organizations were present, highlighting the fair’s holistic approach to health and well-being.
Community Outreach and Awareness
Senator Kirkland Russell, Deputy Director of Urban Renewal, noted the significant turnout of seniors and emphasized the need for more extensive health initiatives in urban areas. The transportation services provided to residents from West and Central Grand Bahama further encouraged participation.
Focus on Vision Care
“We have to do more of these kinds of events,” said Russell. “There need to be satellite operations in high-density areas to make health services more accessible.”
Government Support and Appreciation
Turks and Caicos Minister of Health, Shaun Malcolm, expressed enthusiasm for the efforts being made to enhance the health of seniors and community members overall. He stated the initiative showcased the government’s dedication to health advocacy.
