Unlocking Leadership Potential at the 2025 ATN CEO Summit
At the recent 2025 ATN CEO Summit, executive consultant and life coach James Schor shared enlightening strategies for personal and professional development targeted at executives in attendance. Schor emphasized that being an effective leader necessitates more than mere intelligence or working long hours. He advocates for a concept he refers to as ‘leading from the inside out.’
Kaizen: The Philosophy of Continuous Improvement
One of the key ideas discussed was the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen, which encourages continuous improvement at all levels of an organization. Schor noted, ‘Kaizen involves everybody in the company. It’s a philosophy of continuous improvement, becoming 1% better every day.’
Schor illustrated Kaizen’s effectiveness through the success story of the Great Britain Cycling Team, which transformed from underperformance to global champions with the application of what Sir David Brailsford termed ‘marginal gains.’ These small improvements, such as optimizing bike maintenance and enhancing health protocols, collectively contributed to their remarkable success.
Perception Is Key
Another significant takeaway from Schor’s session was his assertion that perception plays a crucial role in leadership. He stated, ‘The thing isn’t the thing. How I am relating to the thing, that’s the thing.’ This highlights the importance of how leaders view and manage stress. Schor pointed out research indicating that individuals who perceive stress positively can often experience beneficial health outcomes compared to those who view it negatively.
Your Story Shouldn’t Define You
Schor also addressed the concept of internal storytelling and the need to challenge unconscious thought patterns. He illustrated this with the ‘Pot Roast Principle,’ a parable about questioning long-held family traditions that may no longer serve practical purposes. Schor concluded, ‘How we deal and work with those unconscious patterns and blocks is how we move forward in the world without letting our stories run us.’
As the summit came to a close, attendees were encouraged to embrace these lessons for enhanced leadership and organizational success, marking the event as a pivotal moment for the fitness and wellness industry.
