At the University of Kentucky, our sole mission is focused on how we advance Kentucky in everything that we do.
One of the greatest challenges to a vibrant future for Kentucky is health. Health encompasses not just the treatment of illness but also the prevention of illness from occurring. High-quality health is determined by both medical and non-medical factors. Access to the best healthcare close to home is vital, and other elements — like good schools, adequate employment opportunities, wellness centers, and healthy food access — play a critical role in determining quality of life.
A robust and stable economy supports all these essential attributes, and currently, there are reasons for optimism in Kentucky. The state’s population is rising, and the economy is expanding. Yet, to fully tap into this potential, swift action is necessary to enhance various measures relating to overall health in Kentucky.
At the University of Kentucky, the institutional response has been to set ambitious objectives under the leadership of our board of trustees.
Four Pillars of Progress for Kentucky’s Health
- Graduate more healthcare professionals aligned with state priorities. Kentucky ranks low in primary care physicians per capita, facing significant shortages in nursing and public health professions. The University is working to increase capacity through new facilities and educational programs to meet these demands.
- Launch a statewide network to foster community-driven solutions. The Advancing Kentucky Together Network will collaborate with local partners to address holistic health, education, and workforce training.
- Enhance connections through Extension Services. UK’s extension offices, present in all 120 Kentucky counties, will engage community leaders to tackle major challenges facing their regions.
- Build capacity for research into Kentucky’s health challenges. New research facilities are crucial for fostering interdisciplinary work and driving breakthroughs from labs into the community.
As neighboring states like Tennessee and North Carolina make significant progress, Kentucky must also accelerate its growth. Opportunities exist in various sectors, including auto manufacturing, health care, and advanced logistics.
With a dedicated, skilled workforce living in thriving communities, Kentucky’s economic potential can be realized. The University of Kentucky remains committed to collaboratively enhancing the health and well-being of the state.
The message is clear: it’s time to accelerate progress and honor the commitment to a healthier future for Kentucky.
