UConn Health’s Commitment to Community Engagement: Transforming Wellness Initiatives

UConn Health and Community Engagement

At UConn Health, ‘Community’ does not merely signify a word; it represents the cornerstone of its operations. Emphasizing connections among patients, providers, and the broader community, UConn Health acknowledges the pivotal role of collaboration in delivering outstanding care.

This month, UConn Health reflects on its efforts to foster support and uplift within its teams, further advancing community health connections, especially during the Black Family Wellness Expo.

Highlights from the Black Family Wellness Expo

On March 15, UConn Health’s personnel gathered at the Black Family Wellness Expo, a vibrant event dedicated to promoting wellness in the Greater Hartford community. Co-hosted by UConn’s Health Disparities Institute (HDI), this event represented a union of various community partners aimed at addressing health issues.

Dr. Linda Sprague Martinez, HDI director, highlighted, ‘Instead of having scattered UConn departments, we grouped them for the community to see how we collectively engage beyond healthcare delivery.’ This strategic approach showcased the multifaceted roles UConn Health serves in the region.

Interactive Engagement and Insights

During the expo, attendees were invited to engage with representatives from HDI about their health experiences. This initiative led to meaningful feedback on essential health care components, particularly emphasizing the need for empathetic and attentive providers.

‘Events like this allow us to connect in meaningful ways with community residents,’ Dr. Sprague Martinez remarked.

The Role of the JDH Diversity Council

Community Wishing Tree

The JDH Diversity Council also actively engaged expo attendees through initiatives like the ‘Community Wishing Tree,’ where participants shared their health care wishes and obstacles. This initiative acts as an integral part of their mission to promote equity in healthcare.

‘Joining the Diversity Council was about creating a more inclusive healthcare environment,’ said Cassandra Keola, highlighting the council’s dedication to community outreach.

Collaboration Across UConn and Health Entities

Moreover, the event presented a collaborative environment for healthcare professionals aiming to enhance interdepartmental relationships, a crucial factor for improving patient care continuity.

Leslie Bell, a member of the Diversity Council, noted the inspiring atmosphere at the expo, reinforcing UConn Health’s commitment to fostering health and wellness discussions.

Looking Toward the Future

Future wellness initiatives, including impending expos and health-focused events, will continue to engage community members, ensuring that health equity remains a priority at UConn Health.

‘The enthusiasm surrounding community engagement at the expo reaffirms why these interactions are vital for our health initiatives,’ Keola concluded.
