UConn Health and Community Partnerships Strengthen Wellness Initiatives

At UConn Health, community isn’t just a word; it’s the foundation of everything we do. Whether it’s the connections between our patients and providers, the collaboration among our teams, or our commitment to serving those beyond our walls, community defines who we are. This month, UConn Health highlights how its staff and departments support, uplift, and strengthen one another through innovative partnerships and moments of kindness.

On March 15, UConn Health and UConn faculty, staff, students, and researchers converged with community partners at the Black Family Wellness Expo, an annual event promoting health in the Greater Hartford community, hosted by the Artists Collective in Hartford. The expo, organized by The Links Incorporated, saw strong collaboration with UConn Health’s Health Disparities Institute, School of Social Work, and other departments.

“Instead of having UConn and UConn Health departments scattered throughout the expo, we intentionally grouped UConn Health and UConn tables, allowing the community to see how we engage and serve Connecticut residents beyond health care delivery and education,” said Dr. Linda Sprague Martinez, HDI director.

Attendees were invited to share their experiences of what makes for a great health care experience. Dr. Martinez noted that feedback highlighted the need for providers who listen, show empathy, and demonstrate compassion, emphasizing the importance of events like this for meaningful community connections.

Strengthening Diversity and Inclusion Efforts

The JDH Diversity Council played a crucial role in engaging attendees through initiatives like the “Community Wishing Tree,” which allowed participants to express their wishes for community health improvements.

“Joining the Diversity Council was about creating a more inclusive and equitable health care environment,” said Cassandra Keola, administrative program coordinator. Eliza Rivera, a population health manager, added, “I have had the privilege of caring for diverse patients, reinforcing the role of cultural awareness in health care.”

Interprofessional Collaboration at the Expo

Dr. Linda Barry led discussions on Alzheimer’s disease, and a team from CT AHEC provided health promotion education and screenings to over 35 community members. Leslie Bell, an administrative director at UConn Health, shared her experience attending informative panel discussions and facilitating networking among health professionals.

The Future of Wellness Initiatives

The Health Disparities Institute’s partnership with Farmington Valley Links continues to shape future wellness events, including women’s health initiatives focusing on intergenerational dialogues. The ongoing work of the Diversity Council reinforces UConn Health’s commitment to an inclusive workplace and community engagement, with members eager to explore future collaborations.

In reflecting on the expo, attendees voiced enthusiasm and appreciation for the event’s success. “The interest in wellness was encouraging,” said Keola. By sharing resources and strengthening partnerships, the Diversity Council aims to create lasting impact within UConn Health and the broader community.

The success of the Black Family Wellness Expo reinforces UConn and UConn Health’s commitment to community engagement, health equity, and collaboration.
