Significance of Prevention This Winter

TULSA, OKLADecember 17, 2024 – The Tulsa Health Department has issued a reminder to residents about the critical role of preventive measures in combating severe respiratory illnesses, such as influenza, COVID-19, and RSV, as the winter season approaches.

Rise in Respiratory Illnesses During Winter

Health officials note that the activity of respiratory illnesses typically escalates during the colder months. According to the Oklahoma State Department of Health, there have been 138 hospitalizations associated with influenza statewide since September 1, 2024, alongside two reported deaths. Of these hospitalizations, 27 occurred within Tulsa County.

Recommended Precautionary Measures

The Tulsa Health Department encourages residents to adopt basic practices to minimize the spread of respiratory illnesses:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water or utilize an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue while coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid close contact with individuals who are ill.
  • Stay home if experiencing illness.
  • Schedule appointments or visit walk-in vaccine clinics for preventive vaccinations.

Expert Insight on Risk Factors

Associate Director of Prevention, Preparedness and Response, Kelly VanBuskirk, stated, ‘Holiday gatherings, travel, and extended time indoors can heighten the spread of respiratory illnesses.’ She added, ‘Older adults, young children, pregnant persons, and those with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable to severe complications from respiratory illnesses.’

The Importance of Vaccination

Health officials recommend seasonal flu vaccines and updated COVID-19 vaccines for everyone aged six months and older. These vaccines significantly reduce the risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and death caused by these infections. Vaccines are widely accessible at local pharmacies and health care providers, in addition to four locations operated by the Tulsa Health Department across Tulsa County. Residents can easily schedule an appointment online or by calling 918-582-9355. Walk-in opportunities are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at designated health centers.
