Understanding the Pharmacist’s Role in Interoperable Health Care
In an enlightening discussion, TaQuina Warren, PharmD, the owner of Focus Pharmacy in Smyrna, Delaware, shared her journey and the vital role pharmacists play in the American health care system. Warren highlighted how pharmacists serve as the most accessible healthcare providers, interacting with thousands of patients daily.
Warren expressed, ‘The reward comes when you are servicing those patients in the whole aspect, not just on the health aspect. When we look at wellness, it’s mind, body, and spirit.’ This holistic approach reflects her commitment to serving communities, especially the underserved.
Challenges and Triumphs in Pharmacy
Before becoming a pharmacist, Warren had aspirations of being an OBGYN. It wasn’t until high school that she discovered pharmacy through a chemistry teacher, leading to an internship and a passion for diabetes education. She remarked, ‘I was connected with the community and felt as though I could help folks in the community.’
Warren pointed out the challenges faced by pharmacists today, including declining reimbursements and medication shortages, stating, ‘We have to deal with those social determinants of health as well when we’re looking at servicing our patients.’ Nevertheless, she finds great fulfillment in assisting patients holistically and noted, ‘I’ve received many awards… but when your patient says, “Thank you,” or “I love you,” that is the biggest reward.’
Building Community Through Innovative Practices
At Focus Pharmacy, Warren has created an inviting environment where patients can connect and learn. ‘When I first opened Focus, folks would come and hang out, almost like they were here to support me,’ she shared. With renovations aimed at creating a lounge-like atmosphere, she offers educational workshops such as ‘Salad in a Jar’ to promote healthy living.
Warren believes that expanding the role of pharmacists is essential in today’s health care landscape. She stated, ‘We are more clinical. The opportunities are basically endless for us as pharmacists.’ Her vision includes pharmacists acting as proactive members of healthcare teams, positively impacting patient outcomes.
Conclusion: A Commitment to Community and Wellness
Reflecting on her impact, Warren humbly remarked, ‘Just being kind to people… it does my heart really, really good.’ Her journey illustrates the critical importance of pharmacists in both healthcare delivery and community wellness.
