In a world filled with bizarre wellness experiments, those known as biohackers are experimenting on their bodies in hopes of living longer, healthier lives. Popular figures, like self-proclaimed ‘father of biohacking’ Dave Asprey, are leading the charge. However, Asprey warns that some trends could backfire, posing serious threats to one’s health.
Fasting Faux Pas
Asprey is a known advocate of intermittent fasting, even authoring a book on the topic. Yet, he urges caution when practicing this method. “People think, ‘Intermittent fasting is good, therefore, more is better,’ but you can break your metabolism like that,” he shares. He warns that extended fasting can elevate the body’s stress hormone, cortisol, leading to a slew of issues like disrupted sleep patterns and other hormonal irregularities.
Polar Problems
Cold plunges have gained traction within biohacking circles. Despite their popularity, Asprey cautions against overindulgence in cold therapy. “Too much cold exposure can leave you more stressed than refreshed,” he cautioned. Hormonal stress responses could rocket as a result, nullifying the supposed benefits of such practices.
Tripping Troubles
Asprey humorously remarks about his participation in events like Burning Man and acknowledges his interest in psychedelic use. However, he points out that excessive usage without proper understanding and therapeutic application could have detrimental effects on mental wellness. “I see people getting high every weekend with no integration and no therapeutics,” he reflects. This approach may not foster genuine growth or healing.
Not-So-Superfoods
Perhaps most controversially, Asprey criticizes the so-called ‘superfoods’ crowding grocery shelves today. “Everything that no one would eat 10 years ago is suddenly a superfood. That doesn’t make any sense,” He argues that if these foods were genuinely beneficial, they would have been recognized as essential in traditional healing systems long ago. He urges consumers to scrutinize their diets instead of blindly following trends.
Asprey’s insightful exploration of these wellness trends offers a tether to sanity in an overwhelming biohacking landscape. By shedding light on potential dangers, he allows individuals to make more informed and safe wellness choices.
