A study conducted by Lumen, a metabolic health organization, has shed light on the potential health risks associated with consuming donuts for individuals aged 50 and above. The study included 2,700 participants from Israel and around the globe, uncovering that the body’s ability to metabolize carbohydrates declines significantly as people age.

On average, a donut contains 300 to 400 calories, comprised mostly of carbohydrates. For individuals below the age of 50, metabolic activity increases by 20% to 30% after carbohydrate consumption, aiding in effective digestion. However, this increase drops to just 10% for those over 50. The result is a lower ability to process carbohydrates, which can lead to higher fat storage.

The Role of Body Weight in Metabolic Efficiency

Body weight also affects carbohydrate digestion. Normal-weight individuals showed a 30% increase in metabolic activity after consuming carbohydrates, whereas those classified as obese (with a BMI over 30) experienced less than a 5% increase, resulting in prolonged processing times and further fat accumulation.

Understanding Metabolic Flexibility

Metabolic flexibility refers to the body’s capacity to switch between burning fats and carbohydrates based on its immediate needs. Individuals with higher metabolic flexibility can effectively convert carbohydrates to energy, whereas those with lower flexibility are predisposed to store those carbohydrates as fats, potentially leading to fatigue and weight management difficulties. Lumen utilized breath analysis technology to evaluate participants’ metabolic flexibility during the study.

Recommendations for Improved Metabolism

Dr. Merav Mor, a researcher at Lumen, emphasized the importance of metabolic flexibility, stating, ‘People with high metabolic flexibility can process carbohydrates effectively, using them for energy and avoiding fat accumulation.’ To improve metabolism, lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet, regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, and effective stress management are encouraged, meaning individuals can still enjoy treats like Hanukkah donuts with minimal health impacts.
