Healthy Eating Insights from Med Center Health
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In a society increasingly focused on wellness, healthy eating takes the forefront as a topic of discussion among both citizens and lawmakers. Recent studies, including one published in Nature Medicine, have revealed concerning statistics: only 10% of people aged 70 or above achieve what is termed “healthy aging,” characterized by sharp memory, emotional stability, and physical wellness.
Research indicates that adhering to a Mediterranean diet can significantly mitigate the risks of various diseases, including hypertension, heart issues, and certain types of cancer. Experts emphasize incorporating elements such as lean meats, vibrant fruits and vegetables, and natural sugars into daily meals.
Med Center Health’s Director of Health and Wellness, Sarah Widener, acknowledged the challenges of maintaining healthier eating habits today. “We live in a world where almost everything is at our fingertips,” she said, pointing to the convenience of fast food.
Widener noted a common misconception that takeout is a more affordable and preferable option compared to preparing healthy meals at home. However, she clarified that this assumption is often misleading.
“Taking one meal at a time can lessen the stress associated with changing your diet,” she advised. Widener encourages balancing nutrition at a young age but reassures that it is “never too late to prioritize health.”
