The Hulsey Wellness Center at Southern Adventist University serves not only students and staff but also the local community, encouraging inclusivity and health.
As Southern Adventist University celebrates 60 years of its School of Health and Kinesiology, the focus on empowering individuals for better health continues today.
Community Wellness
When members enter the Hulsey Wellness Center, they are often welcomed with friendly greetings from students. Caleb Alvarez, a junior kinesiology major, emphasizes the importance of a welcoming atmosphere, saying, ‘Hulsey provides a fantastic opportunity for us to connect with Southern alumni and community members.’
Local residents from Collegedale and the larger Chattanooga area comprise about a third of the center’s membership, and many praise the helpfulness and hospitality of the staff.
Darin Bissell, a 2003 alumnus and facility manager, shares, ‘We’ve received tremendous feedback on our swim lessons and other programs, especially since enrolling in health insurance programs like Silver Sneakers.’ Many older adults are trying the facility for the first time and enjoying their experience.
Shannon Heftka, a regular swimmer, noted a positive experience when she discovered her insurance covered her membership. She expressed gratitude for the staff’s attentiveness, stating, ‘I know the lifeguards are equipped to help me if I face any issues while swimming.’
Lifelong Fitness
Kayleb Rivas, a senior and head lifeguard, shares, ‘The aquatic program is a significant outreach for us, allowing ties with the community that wouldn’t be there otherwise.’ He ensures kids learn swimming skills effectively and safely throughout the year. Parents often provide positive feedback after lessons.
Kaleb further adds, ‘Our lifeguard certifications bring in people outside our church demographic, proving our facility is valuable to many.’ Chris Gober, a personal trainer and new member, admires the equipment and friendly environment: ‘This gym has the best machines and staff; we are all here to support each other’s fitness journeys.’
The Hulsey Wellness Center offers an extensive list of amenities, from a fitness center to swimming pools and specialized exercise programs for children and adults. Explore this remarkable community asset further at southern.edu/wellness.
