SGMC Health Celebrates Excellence in Nursing and Community Support

At a recent celebration, SGMC Health honored Lindsey Hulsey with the prestigious July DAISY Award, recognizing her extraordinary nursing skills and dedication to patient care. Hulsey’s nomination by a colleague highlighted her compassionate approach, showing the profound impact she had on both her patients and their families.

According to the nomination, ‘Lindsey had been caring for the same patient for two weeks. While caring for him, she spoke with him about his life, his hobbies, and he told her many stories. She formed a strong connection with him.’ This bond was so strong that the patient requested to postpone comfort care until Hulsey was on duty, wanting her by his side during his final moments.

Hulsey’s commitment did not falter; she was dedicated to ensuring comfort and administering medications throughout the patient’s last hours. Her colleague noted how her focus on this patient allowed others to care for her other patients seamlessly.

The DAISY Award is a prestigious recognition given monthly to extraordinary nurses within SGMC Health, based on compassionate care, teamwork, and leadership. Each honoree receives a personalized certificate and a beautifully crafted sculpture, A Healer’s Touch, gifted by The Flower Gallery.

Emotional Wellness Center Ribbon Cutting

The Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Emotional Wellness Center of Valdosta, which has been a vital provider of mental health services since its establishment in July 2019. Founder Kelly Jones remarked on the increased demand for mental health services post-pandemic, stating, ‘After the pandemic, the mental health and substance abuse crisis that our community and society was facing dramatically increased the need for the expansion of services.’

This month marks the center’s five-year milestone, symbolizing its ongoing commitment to community well-being. The center provides diverse services, including therapy for trauma, support for substance use recovery, and mentorship for psychology students.

Recognition of Surgical Team Heroes

SGMC Health also celebrated its surgical team members as health system heroes during a board meeting. The team, recognized for their quick actions in managing a pediatric patient’s malignant hyperthermia reaction, displayed immense attentiveness and teamwork.

Jessica Musgrove, Director of Surgical Services, shared, ‘The patient’s family was extremely grateful to the team for their attentiveness, knowledge, and quick actions taken to save this child. We are happy to report that the patient recovered very well and was home the next day.’

By continuing to recognize excellence within its staff and healers, SGMC Health not only improves patient care but also enriches community welfare.
