Goshen County is making promising strides towards realizing the long-standing dream of a community wellness and recreation center. The initiative, which has seen multiple unsuccessful attempts over the years, now appears to be gaining momentum thanks to collaborative efforts from county officials, the city of Torrington, and various local stakeholders.
Recently, Go Goshen CEO Brian Young, Torrington Mayor Herb Doby, and Goshen County Attorney Eric Boyer shared updates on the project, emphasizing a renewed commitment to this community-focused endeavor. Young explained that discussions have been ongoing among the county, city, and other municipalities to finally bring the wellness center to life.
Boyer highlighted the importance of external funding, noting that grants for health, education, and wellness facilities are potentially available, contrasting with previous projects that relied heavily on tax measures. The project aims to include educational spaces, after-school programs in partnership with local schools, medical rehabilitation services, and facilities for school and college events.
The site proposed for the wellness center is in the Torrington East Side Industrial Park, near elementary schools and accessible via a nearby walking path. The exact location will be determined after a comprehensive feasibility study, which will evaluate aspects such as site suitability and utility access.
Funding avenues for the study include grants and community donations, with a target finish date of November 25, 2025. The study will help define the scope of the project, amenities, and funding strategies. Furthermore, a joint-powers board is being planned to oversee the facility’s development, giving multiple stakeholders a voice in the process.
