PSJA ISD Clinches Victory in Healthier Texas Competition for Seventh Year Running

PHARR, Texas – For the seventh consecutive year, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) has secured the top position in the Large School District Category of the statewide Healthier Texas Competition, formerly known as It’s Time Texas.

The Healthier Texas Community Challenge is an annual competition aimed at fostering healthy habits among school districts, families, and businesses throughout Texas. This year, the competition took place from January 13 through March 9, bringing together a diverse group of participants united by a commitment to healthier living.

PSJA ISD achieved this remarkable feat through the collective efforts of its students, staff, and families, who logged millions of points through various wellness activities, including physical exercise, healthy eating, and community events. Initiatives such as walking clubs, hydration challenges, and outdoor activities showcased the district’s dedication to fostering a culture of wellness.

Dr. Alejandro Elias, PSJA Superintendent of Schools, expressed his gratitude, stating, ‘Winning the Healthier Texas Challenge for the seventh straight year is a true reflection of our district’s culture of wellness and unity. We thank every student, parent, staff member, and community partner who made this possible.’

Furthermore, PSJA ISD implemented its seventh annual PSJA Healthy Schools sub-challenge to encourage school-level participation. Three schools in the district earned top honors in this initiative:

  • Aida C. Escobar Elementary – 1,895,125 points (2nd consecutive win)
  • Audie Murphy Middle School – 2,262,575 points (6th consecutive win)
