In a significant move for community care, Prince George’s County officials celebrated the unveiling of a new human services building in Capitol Heights on Tuesday morning. This facility stands as a part of a broader redevelopment effort in Hampton Park, aiming to streamline access to various health and wellness services.
Previously, many essential services, including social services and senior activities, were dispersed across multiple locations, making it challenging for residents to receive the help they needed. Acting Prince George’s County Executive Tara Jackson highlighted this issue, stating, ‘So many of our residents have to travel to get the support and services they need, so the fact that it’s right here inside the beltway in Capitol Heights is so, so special to us.’
During the ceremonial opening, leaders from both county and state governments collaborated with their partner, Velocity Companies, to commemorate the occasion through a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The new facility features modernized offices, spacious conference rooms, and a gym designed specifically for seniors, equipped with weights and treadmills to promote healthy lifestyles.
The journey to this inauguration was not without its hurdles. Officials reflected on the decade-long development process, which involved multiple governments striving to meet the needs of the community. ‘This building was a long time in coming, and I am so excited because we are finally here,’ Jackson expressed to attendees.
Additionally, this new structure is part of a larger $250 million redevelopment initiative designed to uplift the region. The human services building itself cost approximately $71.6 million to construct.
Velocity Companies’ CEO, Brandon Bellamy, noted further developments that will accompany this new facility. He stated that plans include 200 market-rate residential units, a 120-room hotel, and over 55,000 square feet of green space dedicated to arts and community activities.
Councilwoman Wala Blegay reinforced the significance of this development, expressing that it will become a thriving hub for live, work, and play in Prince George’s County. ‘Put the word out,’ Blegay encouraged, ‘People always talk about where the quality retail is. This is it.’
The opening represents a monumental step towards better accessibility and improved support for residents in the area, symbolizing hope and rejuvenation for the future.
