Pope Francis Calls for Inclusive Health Care on Jubilee of the Sick
On April 6, 2025, during the Jubilee of the Sick, Pope Francis delivered a compelling message emphasizing the crucial role of health care professionals. In his absence, who was recuperating from hospitalization, the text of his address was shared publicly. The Pope noted that the events of this day remind us of the significant challenges faced by those in the health care sector.
Reflecting on a relevant gospel story about a woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11), Pope Francis highlighted the restorative compassion of Jesus. He mentioned, ‘As during my hospitalization, even now in my convalescence I feel the “finger of God” and experience His caring touch.’ His messages urged support and respect for health care workers who are often underappreciated and sometimes face aggression in their work environments.
Encouragement for Caregivers and Investment in Health Systems
Pope Francis called for governments and institutions to invest in health systems that prioritize the most fragile and poorest members of society. He stated, ‘Their mission is not easy and must be supported and respected.’ His appeal emphasized that adequate resources are essential for treatment and research in the health sector.
Additionally, the Pope expressed gratitude towards inmates from Rebibbia women’s prison who sent messages of support during his recovery.
A Message for Peace
Pope Francis also used the occasion to address global conflicts, urging prayers for peace in Ukraine, Gaza, and other areas affected by violence and humanitarian crises. He stated, ‘May the weapons be silenced and dialogue resumed.’ This comprehensive message not only highlighted the need for compassionate healthcare but also called attention to urgent global peace efforts.
In his heartfelt conclusion, Pope Francis invoked the Virgin Mary for protection and intercession, reinforcing the spiritual aspect of his advocacy for inclusivity in health care.
