PNP Announces Additional Legal Actions Against Sara Duterte
Published December 1, 2024, 11:07 AM
The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced plans to file further cases against Vice President Sara Duterte and others following complaints previously filed for direct assault, disobedience, and grave coercion. This announcement came on Sunday, following notable developments related to a recent incident involving Atty. Zuleika Lopez’s health during her detention at the House of Representatives.
PNP spokesperson, Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo, stated during a Super Radyo dzBB interview, ‘Inaasahan natin na may mga iba pa po tayong mga kaso maliban nga dito sa grave coercion, direct assault, at disobedience to persons in authority.’ (We expect that we have other cases to file besides grave coercion, direct assault, and disobedience to persons in authority.) However, she refrained from detailing which specific additional cases would be brought forward.
Previously, the PNP indicated that the actions of Duterte’s personnel may have disrupted the legal processes surrounding Atty. Lopez’s detention, particularly through an unauthorized transfer from the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) to St. Luke’s Medical Center.
In response, Duterte has announced her intention to file counter-complaints against the PNP, alleging disobedience, robbery, and kidnapping.
Assuring Non-Political Motives
PNP chief Police General Rommel Marbil emphasized that the actions against Duterte and her associates are driven purely by legal obligations rather than political motivations. He stated, ‘The PNP remains committed to its mandate to enforce the law without fear or favor. The filing of cases against any individual, regardless of status or political affiliation, is a reflection of our duty to the Constitution and the Filipino people.’
As the situation develops, GMA News Online has reached out to the Office of the Vice President for further comments and will update the public accordingly.
