Petco Launches Groundbreaking Trade-In and Recycling Initiative

Limited-time program offers 40% off new pet gear while promoting sustainability ahead of Global Recycling Day.
Petco has announced its inaugural national trade-in and recycling initiative in partnership with TerraCycle. This event aims to promote sustainability and responsible disposal of old dog collars, leashes, and harnesses while providing discounts on new gear. The program launches in anticipation of Global Recycling Day on March 18 and coincides with spring cleaning efforts.
Event Details
From March 15 through March 29, pet owners can bring their old pet gear to Petco locations nationwide. Participants will receive a 40% discount on new full-priced collars, leashes, or harnesses. This initiative encourages eco-conscious choices while ensuring pets are equipped with safety and comfort.
In-Store Activations
To launch the event, Petco will hold an in-store activation on March 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. local time. Store associates will assist pet owners in choosing the best fits for their dogs while educating them on important topics such as flea prevention and allergy support. The event aims to create an engaging experience for families.
Commitment to Sustainability
Petco stands as the first major pet retailer to partner with TerraCycle for this scale of trade-in and recycling event. The collaboration ensures that old pet gear is recycled correctly, contributing to a more sustainable future. Recycled materials can be utilized in creating products like plastic lumber, pallets, and even insulation.
Jack Stout, Petco’s Chief Merchandising Officer, emphasized, ‘We are evolving our offerings to help pet parents keep their pets happy and healthy while taking significant steps towards creating a healthier planet.’ This initiative not only allows for gear upgrades but also reduces landfill waste.
Importance of Regular Gear Replacement
Pet owners must remember the importance of replacing pet gear regularly. Over time, collars, leashes, and harnesses may fray or become ill-fitting. Darris Cooper, National Dog Training Manager at Petco, noted, ‘Properly fitted collars, leashes, and harnesses are critical to safety. This event is a great opportunity for pet owners to assess their gear and make eco-friendly choices.’
