More than 300 female persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) detained at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) received legal and medical assistance last week, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on December 9, 2024.
According to the DOJ, a significant number of these PDLs are senior citizens and individuals in poor health.
‘Real justice is never confined within the boundaries of law; instead, it is always extended with utmost compassion until it touches the hearts of people, especially those who have less in life,’ Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated.
He reassured the PDLs that the government is committed to protecting and safeguarding their rights.
‘Accept this simple token of my appreciation for your perseverance. I wish all of you a Merry and meaningful Christmas,’ he added.
The DOJ Action Center led this initiative last Friday in cooperation with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Rizal-San Juan-Mandaluyong Chapter, the Legal Aid Society of the Philippines, and volunteer paralegals from the Philippine Law School.
Simultaneously, a medical team consisting of doctors, nurses, and interns provided essential medical and diagnostic testing to the detainees, focusing on their health and well-being.
