A new locally-owned Wave Wellness clinic has opened in Encinitas, aiming to fill a significant gap in the healthcare landscape. This innovative clinic focuses on integrative and functional medicine, prioritizing patient-centered care that targets root causes and sets individuals on a clear path towards wellness.
Meet the Founder
Located in a medical complex across from Harvest Ranch Market, the clinic was founded by Dr. Katherine Ludington, a cardiologist educated at Stanford, UC San Francisco, and UC San Diego. Having established North Coast Cardiology in Encinitas in 2007, Dr. Ludington has always aimed for a holistic and preventative approach to healthcare, recognizing the limitations of traditional methods.
Dr. Ludington expressed her vision, stating, ‘This new clinic is my baby. I’ve wanted to create something like this in our community for many, many years. I’m excited to have this more global view of approaching people’s wellness versus a patchwork of Band-Aids.’
Collaboration with Experts
Dr. Ludington has partnered with Dr. Pooja Gajare, a doctor of internal medicine with a robust background in integrative and functional medicine. Dr. Gajare has trained at the University of Arizona Weil Center for Integrative Medicine and is well-versed in a holistic approach to healthcare.
‘She’s extremely well-trained and lives and breathes this holistic approach to medical care. It’s been a great match for both us,’ Dr. Ludington noted, highlighting the synergy between their practices.
A New Approach to Patient Care
Over the last three years, Dr. Ludington sought out individuals who shared her vision for Wave Wellness, assembling a diverse team that includes a clinical counselor and a professional artist who provides art therapy, among others.
New patients will undergo an initial assessment lasting an hour, where they will complete a comprehensive questionnaire aimed at uncovering their overall wellness goals. The clinic is designed to accommodate patients looking for proactive approaches to health, particularly those at risk for conditions like heart disease, cancer, or diabetes.
Innovative Clinic Design
The clinic’s atmosphere is intentionally different, eliminating traditional exam tables for comfortable couches to facilitate open dialogue between patients and staff. ‘We’ve gotten rid of exam tables and put in couches. The decor is more soothing and relaxing so you can really sit and have conversations,’ Dr. Ludington explained.
Community Engagement and Celebration
On December 5, Wave Wellness celebrated its opening with an open house featuring healthy treats, educational talks, and live music from local band The FM Conspiracy, attracting community interest.
Elated about the clinic’s launch, Dr. Ludington remarked, ‘To finally see it come to fruition is fantastic. It’s just a wonderful thing to see this build and to have the feedback from people that this is exactly what they need and have been looking for.’
