New Regulation Provides Financial Relief for Victims of Torture and Enforced Disappearance in Thailand
A significant development in Thailand took place on Saturday, as a new regulation under the Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act came into effect. This regulation establishes eligibility for four victim groups to receive remedies of up to 500,000 baht.
Em-orn Siangyai, the director-general of the Rights and Liberties Protection Department, stated that the assistance regulation is part of the government’s efforts to address human rights issues related to torture and enforced disappearance.
In addition to financial compensation, the regulation also includes provisions for legal and social assistance, alongside official apologies to the victims. This initiative marks a critical step towards recognizing the suffering of victims and fulfilling the state’s commitment to protect human rights.
