Nevadans Urged to Explore Health Care Options During Open Enrollment

As the open enrollment period for health care coverage continues, Nevadans are urged to act quickly and explore their options through Nevada Health Link. Residents have until December 31 to enroll for health insurance, with coverage starting January 1 for those who meet the deadline. For those enrolling between January 1 and January 15, coverage will begin on February 1.

Katie Charleson, the communications director for Nevada Health Link, emphasizes the importance of this enrollment period, stating, ‘Time to get enrolled is now. Open enrollment is happening now through January 15. It’s a lot more affordable than it has been in the past.’ Currently, about 97,000 Nevadans are enrolled in health insurance through the marketplace.

Benefits of Enrollment

Eligible Nevadans stand to benefit significantly from the enhanced premium tax credits introduced by the Inflation Reduction Act. These credits make health insurance more affordable, especially for individuals who do not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid, or do not have employer-sponsored insurance. Charleson mentions that not only independent contractors but also individuals under DACA and asylum-seekers could find beneficial plans within the marketplace.

Moreover, Nevada Health Link assures confidentiality, with personal information protected under nonpublic charge regulations. Assistance is available in multiple languages, ensuring that all residents can access the help they need to sign up for insurance.

The Importance of Health Coverage

Dr. Jeffrey Reynoso from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services brings attention to the economical aspect of obtaining health coverage. He states, ‘Approximately 86% of Nevadans currently covered are paying an average of $3.50 a day for coverage. That is less than my cup of coffee this morning.’ This highlights the affordability of essential health coverage for many families.

Future Considerations

However, there are looming concerns about potential increases in premiums if Congress does not act to extend the savings from these credits. A report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities indicates that nearly nine in ten Nevadans could face an increase of up to $700 per year in premiums without the continuation of current subsidies.

With the clock ticking on enrollment, Nevadans are encouraged to seize this opportunity to secure health insurance that protects their wellbeing and financial stability.
