Nema Health Expands Virtual Care for Trauma and PTSD
Nema Health, founded by a Yale Psychiatry Residency Program graduate and faculty member, announced on January 8 that it is expanding its program for virtual trauma and PTSD care into new states. This expansion comes with funding from a $14.5 million Series A financing round led by Deerfield Management.
The company, which is both physician- and survivor-led, has developed a virtual treatment program centered around Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), recognized as the most effective treatment for PTSD.
Nema Health’s innovative approach is peer-led, allowing trauma survivors to accompany patients throughout their treatment journey, from the initial interaction to recovery. The clinical model focuses on helping individuals rethink and reshape their beliefs about their trauma, themselves, and their environments.
According to Sofia Noori, MD, MPH, the CEO of Nema Health and a clinical instructor in the Yale Department of Psychiatry, ‘Eighty percent of people will endure trauma in their lifetimes – with many experiencing different forms of trauma such as domestic violence, car accidents, and climate disasters. Around 20% will subsequently develop PTSD.’
‘We’ve built Nema to bring evidence-based treatment and rapid relief to trauma survivors,’ she added, emphasizing the aim of helping patients regain strength and rebuild joyful lives.
Nema’s treatment program boasts remarkable results: after undergoing 4-6 weeks of intensive PTSD care, 91% of patients report clinical improvements, and 82% no longer meet the criteria for PTSD diagnosis. The program is designed to assist patients in rebuilding relationships, intimacy, and trust, which are vital for healing after trauma.
Currently offering services in eight states, including New Jersey, New York, and California, Nema plans further expansion. The clinic is in-network with several national and regional health plans, accepting self-referrals and clinician referrals alike. Covered insurances include United Healthcare, Optum, and Oscar, along with a sliding scale for services.
Clinicians can submit referrals via the Nema Health website, where patients are typically contacted within 24-48 business hours. Prospective patients can also book free consultation calls, often with same-day availability, and intakes generally occur within 3-5 business days of scheduling.
