COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The African American Male Wellness Agency hosted an UPLIFT HER Mother-Daughter Spaliday event on Saturday morning. The event sought to encourage the young women in the community to prioritize their health and wellness.
“We want to model for the young ladies that are in our lives and in the community to make sure that they know when they’re supposed to start taking care of their health,” said Pamela Gregory, co-founder of the African American Male Wellness Agency and UPLIFT HER.
On this special day, dozens of women participated in various self-care activities, which included meditations, a sound bath, and planning sessions for health goals leading into 2025. The event was led by Judge Laurel Beatty Blunt of Ohio’s 10th District Court of Appeals alongside her daughter, Leah.
Judge Beatty emphasized the necessity of self-care during the holiday season, stating, “The holidays can be so full of stress and anxiety. You can get caught up in your to-do lists and the gifts you want to give or receive. So, what a perfect time to take some time out and take care of yourself along with the person that you take care of.”
The ‘spaliday’ was hosted at Base One in collaboration with UPLIFT HER and Penzone Salon and Spa. Debbie Penzone, President and CEO of Penzone Salon and Spa, expressed her gratitude for the event, saying, “My heart is full of gratitude just to see all the moms, daughters, and grandmas come together and cherish this precious time.”
Founded to empower women of color regarding health and wellness, UPLIFT HER continually strives to address serious health issues. Gregory highlighted this mission, pointing out, “Women die prematurely from breast cancer and cardiac disease. Our goal is to create awareness that through prevention, one can live longer.”
Each year, UPLIFT HER hosts a wellness day. Natalie Donnally, vice president of the African American Male Wellness Agency, announced exciting news for 2025, stating that the event is expanding. “The June 18 event will now be held at the Ohio Expo Center. We plan to serve over 7,500 women, ensuring they have equitable access to free health screenings, resources, and a job fair,” she added.
