Mercer University School of Medicine Celebrates 2025 National Residency Match Day
On March 21, Mercer University School of Medicine commemorated the National Residency Match Day 2025 across its campuses in Macon, Savannah, and Columbus. This annual event marks a significant milestone for medical students transitioning into residency programs.
A remarkable 99% of the students from the class of 2025 successfully secured positions in postgraduate training programs at hospitals in Georgia and beyond. Notably, 81% of the matched students are entering core specialties such as family medicine, general internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, psychiatry, and emergency medicine.
The preference for staying in Georgia was evident, with nearly 44% of the graduates matched into residency programs within the state. Impressively, 67% of these Georgia matches are at Mercer-affiliated teaching hospitals, including Atrium Health Navicent, Memorial Health University Medical Center, and Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital.
Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Jean Sumner, expressed pride in the graduates, saying, ‘The Class of 2025 is a wonderful group of accomplished students who are committed to helping provide access to quality health care for all Georgians.’ She further noted the importance of these students as they evolve into physicians that the state desperately needs.

Mercer University School of Medicine, established in 1982, aims to train physicians to cater to the healthcare needs of rural and underserved regions in Georgia. Currently, over 60% of the school’s graduates practice in Georgia, with more than 80% actively serving in rural areas.
As the school continues to expand, the addition of new campuses and a focus on problem-based learning ensures that students receive a well-rounded education that places a strong emphasis on patient care and community health.
