The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has announced that its local units are stepping up their efforts to enhance road safety as the Christmas season approaches. With an expected increase in vehicle traffic, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II emphasized the need for greater visibility on the roads.

“Our visibility on the road is important, especially with the surge of motor vehicles expected during the Christmas and New Year celebrations,” Mendoza stated in a recent announcement.

Focus on Major Truck Routes

In light of recent accidents involving trucks, Mendoza has directed personnel to be stationed on key truck routes throughout Metro Manila and other areas across the Philippines. “The checking should be random; unless a violation is observed, personnel are to remind drivers to exercise caution and ensure that their brakes are functioning properly,” he added.

These measures come following two tragic accidents in Quezon City and Parañaque City that resulted in the loss of six lives. The LTO has taken further steps by issuing show cause orders to the truck owners and drivers involved and suspending their licenses for a period of 90 days.

Encouraging Compliance among Truck Owners

Mendoza urged truck operators and owners to maintain the roadworthiness of their vehicles, stating, “This is part of their obligation concerning their business and to their clients, employees, and all road users.”

Collaboration with Other Agencies

The LTO is collaborating with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), local government traffic units, and the Philippine National Police to ensure comprehensive traffic management during this busy period.

Furthermore, LTO officials in provinces are directed to coordinate with local agencies to aid in traffic flow, reinforcing their commitment to keeping travelers safe as they journey to and from their destinations during the festive season.

The Importance of Road Safety Compliance

As part of its ongoing efforts, the LTO will conduct surprise inspections and random drug tests among public transport drivers. Mendoza stated, “We appeal to our partners in the transport sector to ensure that their units and drivers are physically and mentally fit for the increased demands of the season.”—Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
