Long COVID’s Lasting Effects on Survivors: Parminder Malhotra’s Journey

Understanding the Journey of a Long COVID Survivor

Life drastically changed for 45-year-old Parminder Malhotra after contracting COVID-19 in 2021. Once a fitness enthusiast, he now faces significant challenges, struggling to navigate basic tasks like climbing the stairs of his apartment in West Delhi. ‘As long as I can breathe in fresh air from my balcony, I am okay,’ he reflects, illustrating the struggles many face after surviving the Delta variant.

Currently operating an electrical appliances store, Malhotra frequently visits the long COVID clinic at AIIMS in Delhi, where he receives ongoing treatment for lung fibrosis—a condition caused by his severe infection that has left lasting damage to his lungs.

The Impact of Delta Variant

According to Dr. Anant Mohan, Head of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, patients like Malhotra experience significant lung damage from their initial infection. ‘We didn’t understand COVID’s impact initially, but we now realize that those who faced severe cases need continuous monitoring and rehabilitation,’ he states. Recommendations for these patients include regular check-ups, smoking cessation, and vaccination against pneumonia.

Recent Findings on Long COVID

Dr. Mohan has conducted studies revealing that approximately one-third of long COVID clinic patients experience persistent breathing difficulties. These findings underscore the severe and enduring aftereffects of COVID-19, especially amongst women, seniors, and those who experienced serious infections.

Despite tapering his oxygen support, Malhotra recalls some challenging moments when he needed assistance, particularly during emotional stresses like Diwali celebrations. ‘I experienced intense coughing bouts that left me gasping for breath,’ he recalls.

A New Chapter and Hope Ahead

Malhotra’s wife, Anjali, reflects on the family’s struggles post-COVID. ‘Given his health status, he was often in and out of hospitals, and we faced significant financial and emotional challenges,’ she shares. As they adapt to their new normal, the couple emphasizes the importance of moving forward positively, prioritizing their children’s future and embracing a healthier lifestyle.

Malhotra concludes, ‘Covid changed our lives. A new life means it has to be lived better.’ With determination, he continues to push through his daily challenges, seeking to inspire others who may be facing similar trials.
