A Leatherback Sea Turtle’s Remarkable Nesting

In a heartwarming display of nature’s resilience, a leatherback sea turtle laid 127 eggs on Ko Phra Thong in the beautiful Phang Nga province of Thailand. This notable event was reported by the Marine and Coastal Resources Office 6 on Saturday.

Discovery of the Nest

Following a tip-off from a local resident on the island in Khura Buri district, officials from the Mangrove Resources Conservation Centre 10 swiftly responded and proceeded to inspect Tung Dab Beach, where the turtle’s nest was located. Although signs of the large turtle were scarce, the officials successfully uncovered the nest containing 127 eggs – 82 of which were fertilised, 44 were unfertilised, and one was broken.

Protective Measures for the Eggs

Recognising the potential dangers posed by rising seawater and other natural threats, the officials promptly relocated the eggs to Khuk Khak Beach in Takua Pa district. Here, they established a barrier to safeguard the eggs until they hatch.

Ongoing Care for the Nest

Officials from the Marine and Coastal Resources Office 6 will remain vigilant, ensuring the protection of the turtle eggs until they hatch and the baby turtles safely make their way back to the sea. This process is expected to take approximately 55 to 60 days.
