Innovative HIV Prevention: A Transformative Shot for the Future

MEXICO CITY — It’s been hailed as the closest the world has come to a vaccine against the AIDS virus. Researchers have announced a twice-yearly shot that was 100% effective in preventing HIV infections among women during clinical trials, with results published recently showing nearly identical success rates in men.

Drugmaker Gilead has pledged to allow affordable generic versions to be sold in 120 developing countries, particularly in regions with high HIV rates like Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. However, there are concerns as Latin America has been largely excluded from this initiative, where the incidence of HIV is increasing, raising fears that a critical opportunity to combat the disease may be overlooked.
