New Developments in Mental Health Care Access
Starting this month, Western Slope residents, particularly those insured by Monument Health, will see notable improvements in access to mental health care.
This positive change stems from a new partnership between Monument Health and SonderMind, an outpatient therapy and psychiatry provider based on Colorado’s Front Range.
Bringing More Options to the Community
According to SonderMind’s Commercial and Consumer Business President, Jen Meyer, this partnership introduces an extensive network of over 2,500 insured therapists and psychiatry providers available to residents of western Colorado.
Meyer explains, ‘Our partnership with Monument Health exemplifies our aim to elevate mental health to the same importance as physical health, enhancing overall health outcomes and providing necessary telehealth options for the Western Slope.’
Addressing Historical Challenges
The Executive Director of Monument Health, Marguerite Tuthill, remarks that this collaboration is particularly exciting for improving access to behavioral health services in an area that has historically faced challenges in this regard.
The 2023 Colorado Health Access Survey indicates that around 13% of Mesa County residents required mental health care but did not receive it, mainly due to unavailability of appointments.
Flexible Appointment Options
Further enhancing access, Tuthill notes that SonderMind offers a diverse range of appointment times, catering to individuals’ busy schedules.
‘Feedback from our self-insured employers highlighted that employees often can’t attend therapy during work hours, necessitating after-hours and weekend options,’ Tuthill stated, emphasizing the need for more flexible choices.
The Scope of the Partnership
SonderMind’s services stand out not only for increasing provider numbers but also for customized matching. Meyer mentioned, ‘We utilize a matching algorithm and primary care provider insights to connect patients with subspecialties that suit their needs, offering various therapists and psychiatry providers to fit individual preferences.’
Insurance Coverage Options
In addition to being part of Monument Health’s insurance plans, SonderMind accepts a range of private insurance and Medicare Advantage plans, but currently does not accept Medicaid.
A Caring Approach to Mental Health
Both Meyer and Tuthill view this partnership as a significant stride towards integrating mental health into standard healthcare practices, a crucial consideration given the interconnectedness of mental and physical health.
‘The mind is part of the human body, and emotional situations can manifest physically,’ Tuthill said, emphasizing the comprehensive approach to healthcare advocated by both organizations.
Conclusion
This partnership represents a vital advancement in the delivery of mental health services, fostering a supportive network for residents in Western Colorado who seek therapeutic assistance.
As call-outs for better mental health services continue across the nation, this collaboration positions Monument Health and SonderMind as leaders in promoting comprehensive care.
