Enhancing Workplace Ergonomics at IKEA
In an innovative move to improve workplace ergonomics, IKEA has rolled out over 400 exoskeleton devices across 14 countries. Developed in collaboration with Ottobock, a leader in prosthetics, these wearable exoskeletons are aimed at reducing physical strain on employees during tasks that involve lifting and repetitive movements.
The initiative reflects IKEA’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the health and safety of its workforce while adapting to rising customer demands.
Marcus Baumgartner, the global head of Fulfillment & Services at IKEA Retail, stated, ‘Exoskeletons aim to minimize the negative impact of physical workload and fatigue on our co-workers’ health. This helps ensure a better quality of life both in and out of work, thereby enabling our co-workers to feel more energized after shifts.’
Initial feedback from this rollout has shown promising results, with reports of reduced physical strain, improved safety through better posture, and a more inclusive workplace where physically demanding tasks become more manageable for all employees.
IKEA plans further expansion of this program into additional countries, such as India, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Japan, and China, reaffirming its commitment to investing in employee health and creating a more inclusive work environment.
