ICE Operation in New York City Results in 206 Apprehensions
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that its agents, in collaboration with local law enforcement, apprehended 206 illegal immigrants during a weeklong operation in and around New York City, conducted from April 6 to April 12.
The operation targeted “egregious criminal alien offenders,” according to ICE. Judith Almodovar, Acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in New York City, noted that “the majority of the aliens arrested have egregious criminal histories to include manslaughter, rape, assault, drug trafficking and sexual assault against minors.”
Todd Lyons, acting ICE Director, stated, “New York is much safer today because of the hard work of ICE and our law enforcement partners. Throughout this enhanced enforcement operation, we targeted the most dangerous alien offenders in some of the most crime-infested neighborhoods in and around the city of New York.”
ICE reported that 121 out of the 206 apprehended had “significant criminal convictions or are currently facing charges for crimes such as murder, assault, arson, sex crimes, drug crimes, and firearms crimes.” Some arrested individuals are allegedly affiliated with gang activity.
These arrests coincide with protests planned in New York City and across the nation, as the ‘Communities Not Cages’ initiative aims to rally against increased detentions and deportations under the Trump administration. Local activists are urging for a re-evaluation of immigration policies that target vulnerable communities.
