
Indonesia’s Wellness Tourism Initiative
The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (MoTCE) recently hosted the 2nd Indonesia Health Tourism Exchange Forum (IHTEF) in Jakarta. This event aimed to expand Indonesia’s health and wellness offerings, showcasing the country’s potential in this growing sector.
Showcasing Local Wellness Providers
The event featured a B2B meeting component with 20 local wellness providers presenting health products and activities. Additionally, 40 local travel companies attended as buyers, exploring opportunities to incorporate wellness into their offerings.
Unique Wellness Experiences
Attendees were introduced to a variety of wellness products, including cultural elements such as traditional dances. Highlights included the Sanggar Tari Kinanti Sekar healing dance, Rumah Atsiri’s aromatic wellness journey, and the Balinese wellness wisdom from the Bali Medical Tourism Association.
Indonesia’s Position in the Global Wellness Economy
According to The Global Wellness Institute, Indonesia’s wellness economy grew from US$35 billion in 2017 to US$36.4 billion in 2020. Despite this growth, Indonesia ranks 19th globally and seventh in the Asia-Pacific region.
Strategic Goals for Wellness Tourism
Itok Parikesit, director of special interest tourism at MoTCE, emphasized the need for a strategic approach to wellness tourism. The goal is to position Indonesia as a global wellness tourism destination by leveraging traditional and local wisdom.
Testimonials from Industry Leaders
Kinanti Sekar, founder of Sanggar Tari Kinanti Sekar, shared that her studio often receives tour groups interested in learning dance as a cultural experience. This has inspired her to focus on healing through dance. Meanwhile, Andi Alwani, COO of Kelas Piknik Tour, was motivated by IHTEF to create special wellness packages, noting the high demand for wellness programs in tour packages.
