Introduction
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Reggie Winston has a unique way of interacting with his clients and is now taking it up a notch when it comes to their health.
Client Experience
“I have learned the importance of going to the doctor and not being afraid to ask questions,” said Zinfindale Smith.
Smith says this is one of the fundamental messages he has learned since coming to the Bar Ber Shop for years. They took it a step further by hosting a Men’s Health and Wellness fair on Saturday.
Health and Wellness Fair
“We have blood pressure screenings, STD screenings, and mental health check-ins,” said Winston.
Winston’s non-profit Grooming Resources and Opportunities, along with other community partners, is addressing physical and mental health disparities in Black and brown communities by using the barbershop as an intervention point.
Open Conversations
“We have real conversations; it’s a safe place and a brave place to have open conversations,” said Winston.
They hope these open conversations, especially with men, will help them fight gender stereotypes and share their feelings.
Mental Health Component
“We found that if we offer blood pressure screenings and some of these checks, it would allow us to tap into the mental health component,” said Clinical Mental Health Counselor Dr. Rodney Harris.
Impact on Youth
It’s this component that parents say is so important for young boys, along with getting a fresh cut. “It’s a great self-esteem thing; make sure they look good and feel good,” said Benetta Thai.
