Raising Awareness for Water Safety

NEW BERN, N.C. – In recognition of World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25, the Twin Rivers YMCA is raising awareness about water safety and steps to prevent drownings.

Understanding Drowning Risks

The YMCA emphasized that drowning, a leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide, is preventable with proper education and precautions. According to the World Health Organization, 236,000 people drown each year, with the highest rates among children aged 1-4 years.

Key Safety Messages

Here are some crucial safety tips:

  1. Learn to Swim: The YMCA offers swimming lessons for all ages and skill levels.
  2. Supervise Closely: Always designate a responsible adult to watch over swimmers.
  3. Use Life Jackets: Ensure everyone, especially children, wears a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket around water.
  4. Educate About Water Safety: The YMCA offers programs to teach water safety rules.
  5. Secure Pools and Hot Tubs: Enclose pools with a four-sided fence and use self-latching gates.

Community Engagement

The Twin Rivers YMCA partners with Craven County Schools and local private schools to educate 3rd and 4th-grade students on water safety through its Safety Around Water Program, funded by the Twin Rivers YMCA Annual Campaign.

“Everyone deserves to enjoy water activities safely,” said Teresa Tefft, Director of Health & Wellness at the Twin Rivers YMCA. “By promoting water safety education and providing swim lessons, we can prevent drowning and create a safer community.”
